Turkeys

Picture
Turkeys are intelligent and sensitive beings who deserve much more respect than they are generally given. They have a wide range of personalities and are a joy to get to know! I was thrilled to meet Turpentine at Farm Sanctuary in Watkins Glen, New York. He became famous for photobombing when visitors took photos there, and was more than willing to pose with me.

This link starts by sharing some wonderful facts about and photos of wild turkeys, and then shows how much they suffer on factory farms. Karen Davis, founder of United Poultry Concerns has written an entire fascinating book on turkeys called More Than a Meal: The Turkey in History, Myth, Ritual, and Reality that examines the cultural and natural history, as well as the  biological needs and concerns of turkeys, and discusses our paradoxical and complex relationships with them. Farm Sanctuary summarizes the realities of turkey production on factory farms.
